Graduate jobs have been predicted to be at a low point this year and as such it is the time for graduates to be prepared for the slow hiring this year. The Association of Graduate Recruiters (AGR), have confirmed that vacancies have plummeted by 24.9% in the latest recruitment round approaching levels not seen since the last recession in 1991. This means that there are not only fewer jobs but also stagnant salary levels and much increased competition job opportunities. Carl Gilleard, Chief Executive of the AGR, said: “I would also like to reassure graduates that though things will be harder, their degree is a valuable asset and that there are still opportunities out there for those who do their research and focus on quality rather than quantity of applications." Whilst there are still excellent opportunities available you need to be very well prepared in order to succeed. Here are some options to consider: Consider Placements / Internships
With thousands of CVs being submitted to any open position, the chances of being hired are tougher than ever before. Increase your chances of being hired by first considering placements / internship and gaining the experience which is often desirable by companies. If an organisation had a choice between a fresh graduate and one with industry experience, they would most definitely go for the one with experience.
Tap into your Networks
Networking is an important method which can introduce you to new opportunities. Tap into social network sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, your parents and even your friends’ to find out about suitable opportunities. Tailor your CV
The qualities that an employer will look for in an applicant will vary between industry sectors. By tailoring your CV to the specific industry to which you are applying you can greatly increase your chances of securing an interview. Please check our CV guidance page to help you create a CV

Nex Communications Ltd said: "There were several candidates whose CVs and Covering Letters had grammatical errors and spelling mistakes. As we were looking for potential writers this is something that has to be perfect." GJS Top Tip - Take time to customise your CV and demonstrate how your experience and skill-set links to the job you are applying for, and always check for spelling and grammar mistakes before submitting your CV.
Great Art said: "The most ideal graduate for us in a marketing role is one that has done a placement year." GJS Top Tip - The placement experience is a valuable opportunity to enhance your employability skills. It is important to show potential employers that, as well as the knowledge gained on your course, you also have practical experience. This is often the best way to show future employer’s that you are committed to getting into their industry.
