In this newsletter: - Business Directory
- Regional Graduate Careers Fairs

Use the GJS business directory to research companies in the South you may be interested in working for. If they are not currently recruiting you could approach them speculatively with a targeted CV and covering letter. Step 1: select the business directory on the left hand side of the website
Step 2: You can search under each employment area for companies.
Step 3: Search by keyword eg. company name
Step 4: Use the weblinks to research the company website
Speculative applications usually mean that an employer has not advertised any vacancies but nevertheless might show an interest in you if they receive a well timed and targeted application. To stand the best chance of success you need to: - know about the job role you are applying for
- research thoroughly the organisation you are applying to
- develop a targeted CV and covering letter being clear about what you are looking for and what you can offer
- follow up your speculative application with a phone call to see if they have received your details, or to get further contacts if appropriate.
When you are making a speculative application you should always write to a named person if possible - people take more notice of letters addressed to them rather than letters which say 'Dear Sir/Madam'. So do not address the letter to the Personnel Manager or Human Resources Manager; contact the company direct and find out the name of the person and their correct job title.
