What is workforce planning?

Within the healthcare sector there are many different professions and specialist career pathways for medical graduates. Some-times there are shortages of particular professions, for example, dentists. Workforce planning attempts to predict what future requirements are likely to be so that health managers can plan their recruitment and investment in training.

The time taken for a specialist to become fully trained can take a number of years. So it is important to determine what the future demand of particular healthcare worker groups is likely to be, versus the predicted supply of those becoming qualified.

There are many factors that can influence the future profile of the healthcare work-force, for example, economic factors, migration of workers, public health (such as incidence of alcohol related conditions) or the impact of government policy. By the gathering and analysis of data, together with the creation of a model that reflects the variables in influence, it is possible to predict potential supply and demand for the next five to ten years.

Who is the NHS Workforce Review Team?

The NHS Workforce Review Team (WRT) is a group of workforce planners. WRT has offices based in Winchester and Leeds. In addition to carrying out an annual programme of work for the Department of Health, WRT also takes on projects for other parts of the NHS, for example, carrying out research or producing be-spoke software.

Roles within WRT include:

Information Analyst - analysis of complex information, interpretation and comparison to create a report or presentation to advise the Department of Health on future policy.

Data Modeller - developing statistical models to provide analytical support.

Project Manager - to plan and organise projects and teams from initial discussion with the client to final delivery.

Career Pathways

As a graduate, you will find that you have many opportunities to build on the skills you developed while at university. For example, there will be opportunities to develop your skills in project management, Microsoft Office packages and other statistical software.

WRT are committed to supporting the development of their staff, both temporary and permanent, through education, training, coaching and mentoring.

Recruitment day

WRT is holding a recruitment day for graduates in June. You will be invited to visit our offices in Winchester. You will be asked to:

-     Take a numerical reasoning test

-     Take part in a panel interview

-     Join a group discussion with a member of WRT about a healthcare related topic.

This process will take approximately an hour and a half. Your appointment will be fixed sometime between 9.00 am and 5.00 pm.

You will have an opportunity to talk to WRT staff and ask questions about the work. Many WRT staff are relatively recent graduates and will be able to share their experiences since leaving university and joining WRT.

Terms and conditions

Successful attendees will be contacted and asked to register with a local recruitment agency for a trial period of work at WRT.

Fixed term employment with WRT is a possibility after a successful trial period.
