Candidate tips

We asked the employers we are working with at GJS to provide feedback to help with your applications and interviews:

CV and covering letter feedback

“The main issue for all was that CVs were not tailored to the role. Many of the applicants offered marketing degrees, but administration experience varied. It was also apparent that some had an interest in the arts and young people this was also a deciding factor. “

Jay Barron ENYAN Development Manager - Artswork

“Candidates had not tailored their CV's or covering letters to the job - listed the wrong job title on their covering letter - Candidates did not seem to have looked at the organisation and what Artswork does - Lack of relevant experience or interest in the sector - Their comments did not match the job description or seem to meet their personal career aims.”

Rachel Preston Artsplan Development Manager - Artswork

Interview tips

Telephone interviews

Telephone interviews are frequently used by employers at the short listing stage to determin whether or not they will interview you in person. You should treat the telephone interview like any other interview - see our tips

Face - to - face interviews

“As we are a small company the feel of the person is as important, if not
more so than their specific abilities, the candidate we chose was enthusiastic both for the company and our products.”

Jonathan Salomon, Jomoval

“1. Turn up ON TIME (not 15 mins early!)  2. Be smart and well presented 3. Bring a copy of your CV.  4. Research the company you are going for an interview with.   5. Email the company after the interview to thank them for their time and reiterate why you think you’d be the right person for the job.”

Marcus Green – Toolkit Websites

“What has become apparent during the last few interviews is how the candidates are unprepared for the interview process, both in terms of interacting skills and how to prepare for an interview. (i.e. research company, questions). I am also finding a huge variant in the attire they wear to an interview and I feel that maybe it would be better to be the smartest rather then the least smart so some advice on what attire is and isn't appropriate.”

Gemma Goodson, Finance Director, Northwood Franchise Department
