Jomoval
Your experience and reasons for hiring an intern through the GJS scheme:
We are a growing company of 2 people. In order to help the company grow, there were lots of things that needed to be done with regards to marketing, but which we simply did not have the time to do. This affected our growth potential. Since my personal experience of graduating into the last major recession I had wanted to give a recent graduate an opportunity to gain experience in their first real job after graduating. GJS made it very easy for us to find suitable local candidates
What have been the benefits of hiring a graduate intern?
We have been able to get a vast amount of things done which would not have been done otherwise. The largest and most important of these is preparation of our second website www.jomoval.com for going E-commerce live. But we also now have twitter and Facebook accounts for both of our websites and issue monthly newsletters as well as many other things.
How has the intern performed against your expectations?
Sophie is great. She is very organised, punctual, creative, has an excellent knowledge of the web and graphics design and above all is highly motivated and able to work totally independently. Although her other attributes are of course important, the last of this list is possibly the most important as the 2 of us a very busy and simply cannot stand over someone to ensure that they are doing what we have asked.
Have you offered an extended contract/permanent position to the intern?
We have recently seen a significant dip in business which, if prolonged, could put Sophies position in jeopardy. However assuming we see an upturn in the next couple of months, we plan to keep Sophie as long as she wants to stay with us.
What advice would you provide candidates when applying for jobs in the future?
Only apply for positions where you clearly have at least some of the required skills. We received too many applications from candidates who were applying out of desperation.
