PUSH (Partnership for Urban South Hampshire)
Your experience and reasons for hiring an intern through the GJS scheme:
PUSH required an individual to support the work of both the Programme and Information Manager and the Economic Director. The role includes: attending meetings as and when required, oversee research as directed; produce monthly economic intelligence bulletins; assess the validity and reliability of sources of information to establish effective contacts; make regular contacts with senior managers both internal and external partners.

The calibre of graduates applying for the role
Generally very good because we have now appointed a very good candidate both on paper and in practice. A hand full of the candidates we interviewed did not have the relevant qualifications. However, this scheme has proven just how beneficial it is to appointing graduates because they can offer a different perspective to the role and learn so much prior to working in their chosen career.
The interview process
PUSH interviewed the candidates so all was well.
How this scheme differs from the way you normally recruit
Didn’t differ much from how we would normally recruit graduates. The only difference being that we recruited via candidates from the University which created a fantastic opportunity in creating local jobs for local people.
What have been the benefits of hiring a graduate intern?
PUSH has a strong ethos for enabling local jobs for local people and the fact that this process enabled the organisation to meet that ambition was very much welcomed.
How has the intern performed against your expectations?
He has performed extremely well. A bright, intelligent team player who is able to use his initiative and fit into adopt to, what can be a hectic environment, quite quickly. His work is also of good quality.
Have you offered an extended contract/permanent position to the intern?
Unfortunately, due to the current fiscal climate and the fact that, as a public body, we are having to make huge savings, we don’t anticipate keeping him on. Had circumstances been different then I am certain he would have been an asset in the long-term.
How can we improve our service?
Your service to date is very good so not much to add.
What advice would you provide candidates when applying for jobs?
Candidates should ensure that they read the job requirements carefully to determine whether or not the job is right for them or indeed whether they are right for the job. This is crucial because only then can you begin to tease out his / her transferable skills to ensure you are able to perform well at interview. Also think of your future career path, and ask yourself will the job you are about to apply for provide you with the necessary skills / add value to your future career. Research the company for background information and the length of contract.
