New Year, New Start!

- Set yourself a 3 month employment goal

As we get into the swing of the New Year, the weeks ahead are the perfect time to plan what you want from 2010 and beyond, and to set the personal employment goals that will help you achieve this.

Make it a goal to accomplish several things each day such as:

  1. Research employment opportunities
  2. Establishing and strengthening network contacts
  3. Applying for jobs / Making speculative applications
  4. Attending interviews
  5. Following up leads / feedback from employers

Set your self a three month employment goal.  Ask yourself; what type of work am I looking for?

Develop an idea of some key things you are looking to achieve in your job search such as:

·         Do you want to work full-time or part-time?

·         Are you looking for an internship, placement, graduate job, work experience or volunteering?

·         Which employment areas would you like to work in? Office work, engineering, marketing, charities etc.

·         Would you like to work for an organisation with more or less than 100 employees?

·         Are you willing to commute from home?

·         Are you willing to work abroad?

By setting clear and specific employment goals you will have a much better chance of achieving it.

This will also help when writing your CV, Covering Letter and compiling your list of employers to target because you can easily refer back to your employment goals.

It’s a bit of a cliché, but the best way to focus on finding a new job is to treat the job-search like a job.  Invest as much time, energy, and commitment to finding a new job as you would expect to do in your job.

Remember, the more you do today will greatly improve your chances of finding the right job for you tomorrow!
